The ancient Norse carved spindle whorls out of soapstone; whorls almost identical to these have been pulled out of archaeological digs at l'Anse-Aux-Medeaux in Labrador. Our spindle whorls are hand-quarried and hand-carved by my wife Bella. The dowels have hooks at the top and bottom of the stick for ease of anchoring thread; the original Norse spindles would have simply had carved notches. If you want the spindle a certain length or weight, let us know and we can adjust it. If you'd like runes carved into the whorl, up to four can be done for an additional $5. Each spindle comes with a couple of ounces of hand-carded wool from our sheep to practice on. They range in size, as shown, from extra-large, large, medium, and small. Keep in mind that each one is different, depending on the stone that Bella has to work with.
