For Gythias of all sorts
What's a bracteate? Technically it's a flattened coin that was hung as decoration in ancient times. Eventually, however, Norse and Saxon women began to wear swags of them, along with beads, hanging from two brooches. We do see examples of them that are entirely beads, as well. I'm using the term here to refer to those bead swags. They are pinned to the front of the shoulders, 1-3" below the middle of the collarbone. They are not reproductions of anything worn during the Viking era; they are made with modern materials in honor of the Gods. These ritual bracteates are ceremonial garb for Northern-Tradition women who want to honor specific deities - perhaps a fulltrui, perhaps Someone who will be invoked in ritual.
These don't come with brooches; you'll need to buy your own. Any pair of large sturdy brooches will hold them up. If you want the authentic-looking type, we suggest you try Raymond's Quiet Press or Urweg Nordic Tribal Jewelry.
Please note: These are for ritual purposes, and each one is specially dedicated to the deity in question. Please do not order one unless you love that Goddess or God and intend to wear it in their honor, ideally in ceremonial circumstances. If you just want one because it's pretty and don't have any particular relationship to that deity, email me with a color scheme and I'll make you one that's not consecrated to anyone. I will also do custom bracteates for deities that I don't have up here yet. More are coming soon!
The ones below are one-of-a-kind; if more than one person orders them, I will make more. They'll be similar but not identical; no two are exactly alike. I make each one to the specs of the deity who asks for it. If yours is backordered, expect 4-6 weeks for delivery.
Nerthus
For the Earth Mother of Vanaheim. Jasper in many colors, lepidolite, brown glass, hand-painted wood with Jera runes, and cattle teeth! A dramatic piece.
|
Frigga
Like the sky and clouds, for the Lady of Asgard. Moonstone, blue howlite, gold, iridescent and pearl and lampworked glass, iridescent glass pendant.
|
Skadi
For the Lady of Winter, an icy festoon of glass and rock crystal with a little snowflake obsidian and a rock crystal arrowhead pendant.
|
Iduna
In the colors of ripe fruit. Aventurine in many shades, rose quartz, pale carnelian, honey jade, and glass, including beads with apple blossoms imprinted in them.
|
Gerda
For Frey's etin-bride, Lady of the Walled Garden. Brown and green jasper, rosewood, and brown and purple glass. Subtle and deep for this quiet goddess.
|
Holda
Pale agate, brown jasper, rose quartz, rosewood, and glass beads with wild roses - Holda's flower. One comment on seeing this one: "It looks like something your classy grandmother would wear, you know, the one with the spotless house and the floor you could eat off of if you dared, except you don't."
|
Freya
It isn't Brisingamen, but it's worthy of the Vanadis! This is the most elaborate bracteate I make (of course), with four strands in a froth of buttery amber, aventurine, honey jade, pale carnelian, and golden glass.
|
Laufey
For Loki's mother, the Lady of the Leafy Isle. Moss agate, unakite, and green glass, with stone and glass leaves.
|
Jord
Earthy and sensual, like Thor's mother. Aventurine, jasper, moss agate, lepidolite, hand-painted wood, green glass, leaf pendant.
|
Hela
The right side is black goldstone, black glass, and silver; the left is bone beads with skulls in bone, horn, brass, silver, and glass. Bone flowers adorn the center.
|
Odin
For the Odin's woman! Midnight blue goldstone, sodalite, wood hand-painted with Odin's runes Ansuz and Gar, silver pearl and deep blue glass.
|
Loki
Carnelian and aurora-borealis fire glass for the woman who loves Laufey's son.
|
Frey
For the Frey's woman. Amber, green jasper, golden glass, and nuts for the God of Fertility.
|
Bifrost - Child Size
For little girls who want to look like Mom - simple and small in rainbow-colored glass. Hangs in a space 6-7" across.
