They call us tree worshippers, those people who would sneer at pagans. Yet the trees of the world's forests have protected our ancestors since the beginning, when we swung from branch to branch in order to avoid predators. They have warmed us with their burning and supported us with their deaths. We have built our homes, our furniture, our weapons, our tools, and our decorations from the flesh of what once living wood. We live surrounded by their corpses. They are born not for our sacrifice, but to produce the oxygen that we need. When they give of themselves, we are honor-bound not to waste their tribute. We find the faces of the Green Man with our chisels and saws, and we thank him for his gift...the gift of his living flesh to protect and shelter our own.
