The Earthbone Guild works with the arts of the Earth's flesh, including
pottery, clay sculpture, stonecarving, stonemasonry, and lapidary. Our
patrons are Obatala and Gaea.
People are created from clay in many world myths. Some say that the
different colors of skin tone result from our various foreparents' differing
times in the divine kiln. Clay goes back to the Paleolithic, and to this day
it cradles our food and drink.
On the other hand, stones have long been associated with magic. Every stone
has a particular quality that can be utilized in magic; stone amulets have a
long history. Stone built temples and homes, and tumbled polished rocks to
be worn or carried for magical purposes. Stone and clay are the flesh and
bones of the earth, the most permanent of all forms of art. To work in stone
is to work for the future, knowing that someday a distant descendant will
cradle your work lovingly in their hand and wonder about its maker. It is a
link forward as well as a link back, using those children of the Mother who
live the slowest, and thus can travel so quickly through Time.
